Watauga County Planning & Inspections is accepting applications for the position of Planning and Inspections Director. Position performs complex professional work organizing and directing the operations and staff of the County Planning and Inspections Department. Position also serves as the liaison to the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce for professional work planning, developing, initiating and directing economic development programs and services, assisting existing and potential businesses and industries. Position coordinates work with the County Manager, departments and agencies. Primary job duties involve preparing and administering departmental work programs and budget, analyzing County planning issues, needs, programs, services, and requests for assistance; recommendations on project priorities; prepares applications for federal and state funds and administers expenditure of state and federal funds. Position requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the general public; and local and state officials on planning, development and related matters.

Bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, public administration or related field with extensive experience in planning, ordinance administration and enforcement, and supervisory work or any equivalent combination of training and experience required. County benefit package includes health insurance, retirement, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. Salary grade 23, $94,831 – $118,539 (Dependent Upon Qualifications).
